Lactic Acid

Description

Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from milk or produced synthetically. It's a versatile skincare ingredient known for its exfoliating and hydrating properties. Lactic acid works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath.

With a larger molecular size compared to other AHAs like glycolic acid, lactic acid penetrates the skin more slowly, making it gentler and suitable for sensitive skin types. It has a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) similar to that found in human skin, helping to improve hydration and maintain skin barrier function.

Lactic acid is effective in treating various skin concerns, including fine lines, uneven skin tone, and mild acne. It can help stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and firmness over time. Typically used in concentrations ranging from 5% to 12% in over-the-counter products, higher concentrations are available for professional treatments.

When incorporating lactic acid into skincare routines, it's important to start with lower concentrations and gradually increase usage to minimize potential irritation. Sunscreen application is crucial when using lactic acid, as it can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation.
