LACTIC ACID

Description

Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from milk and fermented fruits. This versatile ingredient has gained significant popularity in skincare formulations due to its gentle yet effective exfoliating properties. With a molecular size larger than glycolic acid, lactic acid penetrates the skin more slowly, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.

At concentrations between 5-10%, lactic acid effectively removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and stimulates cell turnover. It also has humectant properties, attracting moisture to the skin and improving hydration. Regular use of lactic acid can lead to improved skin texture, reduced appearance of fine lines, and a more even skin tone.

Lactic acid has a pH-adjusting effect, helping to maintain the skin's natural acidic environment. This supports the skin's barrier function and can aid in managing acne-prone skin. Additionally, lactic acid has been shown to stimulate ceramide production, enhancing the skin's natural moisture retention capabilities.

While generally well-tolerated, users should start with lower concentrations and gradually increase usage to minimize potential irritation. Sunscreen application is crucial when using lactic acid products, as AHAs can increase photosensitivity.
