Kathon CG
Description
Kathon CG is a widely used preservative in personal care products and cosmetics. This water-soluble ingredient is a mixture of two isothiazolinones: methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and methylisothiazolinone (MI). Kathon CG effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, ensuring product stability and extending shelf life.
The preservative action of Kathon CG is based on its ability to disrupt cellular processes in microorganisms. It is highly effective at low concentrations, typically used at 0.0005% to 0.0015% in leave-on products and up to 0.01% in rinse-off formulations. This potency allows for minimal inclusion in formulations while maintaining optimal antimicrobial efficacy.
However, Kathon CG has been associated with contact allergies in some individuals, particularly at higher concentrations. As a result, regulatory bodies have imposed restrictions on its use. The European Union, for example, has banned its use in leave-on products and limited its concentration in rinse-off products.
Formulators must carefully consider the benefits and potential risks when incorporating Kathon CG into skincare and cosmetic products, balancing preservation efficacy with consumer safety concerns.
