ISOSTEARYL ETHYLDIMONIUM CHLORIDE
Description
Isostearyl ethyldimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound widely used in hair care and skincare formulations. This cationic surfactant functions primarily as a conditioning agent and emulsifier. Its molecular structure consists of a positively charged nitrogen atom bonded to four alkyl groups, including a long-chain isostearyl group.
In haircare products, isostearyl ethyldimonium chloride imparts softness, reduces static electricity, and improves manageability. It forms a thin, lubricating film on the hair shaft, enhancing shine and smoothness. In skincare, it acts as an emollient, helping to soften and moisturize the skin.
The ingredient demonstrates good compatibility with anionic surfactants, making it valuable in formulating cleansing products. It exhibits stability across a wide pH range and is effective at low concentrations, typically 0.5-2% in leave-on products and up to 5% in rinse-off formulations.
While generally considered safe for cosmetic use, some individuals may experience skin sensitization. As with any quaternary ammonium compound, it possesses mild antimicrobial properties, which can contribute to product preservation. However, it is not a primary preservative and should not be relied upon solely for this purpose in formulations.
