ISOPROPYLPHENYL-PROPIONALDEHYDE

Description

Isopropylphenyl-propionaldehyde, also known as Lilial or Butylphenyl methylpropional, is a synthetic fragrance ingredient commonly used in skincare and personal care products. This aromatic aldehyde imparts a fresh, floral scent reminiscent of lily of the valley. Despite its pleasant aroma, Lilial has come under scrutiny due to potential health and environmental concerns.

The compound is known for its ability to enhance and fix other fragrances, prolonging the overall scent of a product. It is often found in perfumes, lotions, shampoos, and various cosmetic formulations. However, Lilial has been identified as a skin sensitizer and potential endocrine disruptor. Studies have shown it may cause allergic reactions in some individuals and interfere with hormonal processes.

Due to these concerns, the European Union has banned the use of Lilial in cosmetic products as of March 2022. Formulators are increasingly seeking alternatives to replace this ingredient in their products. When present in formulations, Lilial is typically used in low concentrations, usually below 1%, to minimize potential risks while still providing its fragrance-enhancing properties.
