ISOPROPYLPARABEN
Description
Isopropylparaben is a synthetic preservative commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. This paraben derivative is an ester of isopropyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid, belonging to the family of alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Its primary function is to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, thereby extending the shelf life of various formulations.
With a molecular formula of C10H12O3, isopropylparaben appears as a white crystalline powder with a faint odor. It is soluble in water and various organic solvents, making it versatile for incorporation into diverse product types. This preservative is effective at a pH range of 4-8, maintaining its antimicrobial properties across a wide spectrum of formulations.
Isopropylparaben exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, particularly against gram-positive bacteria and fungi. It is often used in combination with other preservatives to enhance overall efficacy. Typical concentration levels range from 0.01% to 0.3%, depending on the product type and regulatory guidelines.
While generally considered safe for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies, isopropylparaben has faced scrutiny due to concerns about potential endocrine disruption. As a result, some manufacturers have sought alternative preservation systems in response to consumer preferences for paraben-free products.
