ISOPROPYL THIOXANTHONE
Description
Isopropyl Thioxanthone (ITX) is a potent photoinitiator commonly used in UV-curable coatings, inks, and adhesives. In recent years, it has gained attention in the skincare industry for its potential photoprotective properties. ITX belongs to the thioxanthone family of compounds and is characterized by its ability to absorb UV radiation efficiently. When incorporated into sunscreen formulations, ITX can enhance the overall sun protection factor (SPF) and provide broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.
The molecule's structure allows it to effectively scavenge free radicals generated by UV exposure, potentially reducing oxidative stress on the skin. ITX demonstrates good photostability, maintaining its protective effects over extended periods of exposure to sunlight. However, its use in skincare products is subject to regulatory limits due to concerns about potential systemic absorption. Formulators typically incorporate ITX at concentrations below 0.1% to ensure safety while leveraging its photoprotective benefits. When combined with other UV filters, ITX can contribute to more robust and long-lasting sun protection formulations, making it a valuable ingredient in high-performance sunscreens and daily moisturizers with SPF.
