ISOPROPYL DIBENZOYLMETHANE
Description
Isopropyl dibenzoylmethane is a potent UV filter commonly used in sunscreens and other skincare products. This synthetic compound belongs to the dibenzoylmethane class of chemicals and is particularly effective in absorbing UVA rays, which are responsible for premature skin aging and deep cellular damage. Its molecular structure allows it to efficiently convert harmful UV radiation into harmless heat energy, providing broad-spectrum protection for the skin.
Typically incorporated at concentrations between 1% to 5% in formulations, isopropyl dibenzoylmethane offers excellent photostability when combined with other UV filters. It is often used in conjunction with UVB filters to create comprehensive sun protection products. This ingredient is oil-soluble, making it compatible with a wide range of cosmetic formulations, including creams, lotions, and oils.
While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience sensitivity to this compound. It is important to note that isopropyl dibenzoylmethane can degrade when exposed to sunlight, potentially reducing its effectiveness over time. To mitigate this, formulators often combine it with stabilizing agents or encapsulate it to maintain its protective properties throughout the product's shelf life.
