ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
Description
Isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol or IPA, is a widely used chemical compound in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This colorless, flammable liquid is primarily valued for its rapid evaporation and disinfectant properties. In skincare applications, isopropyl alcohol serves multiple purposes, including as a solvent, antiseptic, and astringent.
As a solvent, it helps dissolve and blend other ingredients, ensuring uniform product consistency. Its antiseptic qualities make it effective in acne treatments and as a preservative, inhibiting microbial growth in formulations. The astringent nature of isopropyl alcohol can temporarily tighten pores and reduce excess oil on the skin's surface.
However, its use in skincare products is often limited due to its potential to cause dryness and irritation, especially in higher concentrations or with frequent use. It can disrupt the skin's natural barrier function by stripping away essential oils. For this reason, isopropyl alcohol is typically used in lower concentrations in leave-on products or in higher concentrations for rinse-off formulations. When formulating with isopropyl alcohol, it's crucial to balance its benefits with potential drawbacks, often by including moisturizing ingredients to counteract its drying effects.
