Isoleucine
Description
Isoleucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid crucial for various physiological functions, including skin health and repair. This alpha-amino acid cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained through dietary sources or topical applications. In skincare formulations, isoleucine plays a vital role in maintaining skin barrier function and promoting collagen synthesis.
When applied topically, isoleucine can penetrate the stratum corneum and contribute to skin hydration by supporting the natural moisturizing factor (NMF). It also aids in the production of ceramides, which are essential lipids for maintaining skin barrier integrity. Isoleucine's antioxidant properties help protect skin cells from oxidative stress and environmental damage.
In combination with other amino acids, isoleucine can enhance the skin's natural repair processes, particularly in wound healing and reducing inflammation. It supports the formation of structural proteins in the skin, contributing to improved elasticity and firmness. Isoleucine's ability to stimulate cellular turnover makes it beneficial for addressing signs of aging and promoting a more youthful appearance. Its inclusion in skincare products can be particularly effective for dry, sensitive, or mature skin types.
