Description

Isobutylparaben is a synthetic preservative commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. This parabens derivative is an ester of isobutyl alcohol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. It functions primarily to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, thereby extending the shelf life of products.

With a molecular formula of C11H14O3, isobutylparaben is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in oils and alcohols. It demonstrates efficacy against a broad spectrum of microorganisms at concentrations typically ranging from 0.01% to 0.3% in formulations. Isobutylparaben exhibits better antimicrobial activity compared to shorter-chain parabens like methylparaben, but is less effective than longer-chain variants such as propylparaben.

While effective, isobutylparaben has faced scrutiny due to concerns about potential endocrine disruption. Some studies suggest it may possess weak estrogenic activity, though at levels far below those considered harmful in typical product usage.
