ISOBUTYLATED LANOLIN OIL
Description
Isobutylated lanolin oil is a modified derivative of lanolin, a natural wax secreted by wool-bearing animals. This ingredient is created through a chemical process that adds isobutyl groups to lanolin oil, altering its properties and enhancing its functionality in skincare formulations.
The modification process results in a substance with improved spreadability and a less greasy feel compared to traditional lanolin. Isobutylated lanolin oil exhibits excellent emollient properties, helping to soften and smooth the skin's surface. It forms a protective barrier that reduces transepidermal water loss, thus aiding in skin hydration and moisture retention.
This ingredient is particularly beneficial in lip care products, hand creams, and treatments for dry or rough skin areas. Its occlusive nature makes it effective in harsh environmental conditions. Isobutylated lanolin oil is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is less likely to cause allergic reactions compared to unmodified lanolin.
In cosmetic formulations, it enhances product texture and stability. It can also act as a solubilizer for lipophilic active ingredients, improving their delivery to the skin. While effective, formulators should consider potential comedogenicity in acne-prone skin when using this ingredient in facial products.
