IODOPROPYNYL BUTYLCARBAMATE
Description
Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) is a synthetic preservative widely used in personal care products and cosmetics. This water-soluble compound is highly effective against fungi, yeasts, and certain bacteria, making it an important ingredient for extending product shelf life and preventing microbial contamination.
IPBC functions optimally at low concentrations, typically between 0.02% to 0.1%, offering broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection. Its efficacy is particularly notable in leave-on and rinse-off formulations, including lotions, creams, shampoos, and wet wipes. The compound's stability across a wide pH range enhances its versatility in various product formulations.
While IPBC provides excellent preservation benefits, it's important to note potential concerns. Some individuals may experience skin sensitization, particularly with prolonged use or at higher concentrations. Regulatory bodies, including the European Union, have established maximum allowed concentrations and usage restrictions, especially in products for children under three years old.
Formulators often combine IPBC with other preservatives to create synergistic preservation systems, enhancing overall product protection while minimizing individual ingredient concentrations. This approach helps mitigate potential irritation risks while maintaining effective antimicrobial activity in skincare and cosmetic formulations.
