ILOMASTAT

Description

ILOMASTAT is a potent synthetic matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor that has gained significant attention in dermatological research and skincare formulations. This small molecule compound effectively targets and inhibits various MMPs, particularly MMP-1, MMP-2, and MMP-3, which are enzymes responsible for breaking down collagen and elastin in the skin's extracellular matrix.

Originally developed for ophthalmic applications, ILOMASTAT has demonstrated promising results in skin health and anti-aging treatments. Its primary mechanism of action involves preventing the degradation of structural proteins in the dermis, thereby maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Studies have shown that ILOMASTAT can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by preserving existing collagen and promoting new collagen synthesis.

In topical formulations, ILOMASTAT is typically used at concentrations between 0.1% and 1%. It exhibits good skin penetration properties and has shown synergistic effects when combined with other active ingredients such as retinoids and peptides. While generally well-tolerated, some users may experience mild irritation or redness. Long-term safety studies are ongoing, but initial results suggest that ILOMASTAT is a promising ingredient for advanced skincare products targeting skin aging and maintenance of dermal integrity.
