ICHTHAMMOL

Description

Ichthammol, also known as ammonium bituminosulfonate, is a unique pharmaceutical ingredient derived from sulfur-rich oil shale. This dark, viscous substance has been used in dermatology for over a century due to its potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and keratolytic properties. Ichthammol is particularly effective in treating various skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

The compound's anti-inflammatory action helps reduce redness, swelling, and itching associated with skin irritations. Its antimicrobial properties make it useful in combating bacterial and fungal infections. As a keratolytic agent, ichthammol aids in softening and removing dead skin cells, promoting healing and skin renewal.

Typically formulated in concentrations ranging from 10% to 20%, ichthammol is often incorporated into ointments, creams, and medicated bandages. Its dark color and distinctive odor can be off-putting to some patients, but these characteristics do not impact its therapeutic efficacy. Ichthammol is generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects when used as directed. However, it may cause skin staining and should be used cautiously on sensitive areas. While synthetic alternatives exist, natural ichthammol remains a valuable tool in dermatological treatments, particularly for stubborn skin conditions resistant to other therapies.
