HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM HYDROLYZED WHEY
Description
Hydroxypropyltrimonium hydrolyzed whey is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient derived from whey protein. This quaternary ammonium compound is created through the chemical modification of hydrolyzed whey protein, resulting in a cationic molecule with enhanced hair and skin affinity.
The ingredient functions primarily as a conditioning agent in hair care and skin care formulations. Its positively charged structure allows it to adsorb onto negatively charged surfaces of hair and skin, providing smoothing and softening effects. In hair care products, it can improve combability, reduce static, and enhance manageability.
Hydroxypropyltrimonium hydrolyzed whey also exhibits moisturizing properties, helping to maintain hydration in both hair and skin. Its film-forming capabilities can provide a protective barrier, potentially reducing moisture loss and environmental damage.
The ingredient is typically used at concentrations between 0.5% to 5% in leave-on and rinse-off formulations. It is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients and stable across various pH levels. While generally well-tolerated, as with any cosmetic ingredient, patch testing is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin or known allergies to milk proteins.
