HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM GELATIN

Description

Hydroxypropyltrimonium gelatin is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from gelatin, a protein obtained from animal collagen. This multifunctional ingredient serves as a conditioning agent and film-former in various skincare and haircare formulations. Its structure consists of gelatin molecules modified with hydroxypropyl groups and quaternized with trimethylammonium chloride, enhancing its substantivity to skin and hair.

In skincare products, hydroxypropyltrimonium gelatin acts as a humectant, helping to attract and retain moisture in the skin. It forms a protective film on the skin's surface, which can temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This ingredient also exhibits antistatic properties, making it particularly useful in hair care formulations to reduce frizz and improve manageability.

Hydroxypropyltrimonium gelatin is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients and is stable across various pH levels. It is typically used at concentrations between 0.5% to 5% in leave-on products and up to 10% in rinse-off formulations. While generally considered safe for topical use, individuals with gelatin allergies should exercise caution when using products containing this ingredient.
