HYDROXYCITRONELLAL

Description

Hydroxycitronellal is a synthetic fragrance ingredient commonly used in skincare and personal care products. This colorless to pale yellow liquid possesses a delicate, sweet floral scent reminiscent of lily of the valley. Despite its artificial origin, hydroxycitronellal closely mimics natural floral scents, making it a popular choice in perfumery and cosmetic formulations.

In skincare, hydroxycitronellal serves primarily as a masking fragrance, helping to neutralize unpleasant odors from active ingredients. It is often found in moisturizers, serums, and cleansers. However, its use is regulated due to its potential for causing skin sensitization in some individuals. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) recommends a maximum concentration of 1% in leave-on products and 2% in rinse-off products.

While hydroxycitronellal contributes to the sensory experience of skincare products, it does not offer direct skin benefits. Formulators must carefully balance its use to achieve the desired scent profile while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions. Individuals with sensitive skin or fragrance allergies should exercise caution when using products containing this ingredient and perform patch tests before full application.
