HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL
Description
Hydrogenated soybean oil is a versatile ingredient derived from the seeds of the soybean plant (Glycine max) through a process of hydrogenation. This modification alters the oil's chemical structure, increasing its stability and shelf life while changing its physical properties from liquid to semi-solid at room temperature.
In skincare formulations, hydrogenated soybean oil functions primarily as an emollient and occlusive agent. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and maintain hydration. The oil is rich in fatty acids, including stearic, palmitic, and oleic acids, which contribute to its skin-softening and conditioning properties.
Hydrogenated soybean oil also serves as a thickening agent and texture enhancer in various cosmetic products. It can improve the spreadability and feel of creams, lotions, and balms. The ingredient is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is often used in products designed for dry or sensitive skin.
While it offers moisturizing benefits, hydrogenated soybean oil is comedogenic for some individuals, potentially leading to clogged pores. As with any skincare ingredient, patch testing is recommended, especially for those with acne-prone skin or known sensitivities to soy-derived products.
