HYDROGENATED PALM OIL

Description

Hydrogenated palm oil is a versatile and widely used ingredient in skincare formulations. This modified form of palm oil undergoes a process called hydrogenation, which adds hydrogen atoms to the oil's unsaturated fatty acids, resulting in a more stable and solid substance at room temperature. The hydrogenation process alters the oil's chemical structure, enhancing its shelf life and resistance to oxidation.

In skincare products, hydrogenated palm oil functions as an emollient and occlusive agent, forming a protective barrier on the skin's surface to prevent moisture loss. It also contributes to the texture and consistency of formulations, providing a smooth and creamy feel. The ingredient is rich in saturated fatty acids, primarily palmitic and stearic acids, which can help to soften and condition the skin.

While hydrogenated palm oil offers benefits in skincare, its use has raised environmental concerns due to the impact of palm oil production on deforestation. As a result, many manufacturers are seeking sustainable sources or alternatives. When used in cosmetic formulations, hydrogenated palm oil is generally considered safe for topical application, but individuals with sensitive skin should perform a patch test before use.
