HYDROGENATED MINERAL OIL
Description
Hydrogenated mineral oil is a modified form of mineral oil, derived from petroleum and widely used in cosmetic and skincare formulations. This ingredient undergoes a hydrogenation process, which involves adding hydrogen atoms to the molecular structure, resulting in a more stable and versatile product. The hydrogenation process increases its melting point and viscosity, enhancing its emollient properties and improving its shelf life.
In skincare applications, hydrogenated mineral oil functions primarily as an occlusive agent, forming a barrier on the skin's surface to prevent moisture loss. This property makes it particularly beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin types. It also serves as an effective emollient, softening and smoothing the skin's texture. The ingredient is non-comedogenic, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores, and is generally well-tolerated by most skin types.
Hydrogenated mineral oil is often used in lip balms, body lotions, and intensive moisturizers due to its ability to provide long-lasting hydration. Its inert nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin formulations. While it does not actively nourish the skin, its protective qualities make it a valuable ingredient in many skincare products.
