HYDROCHLOROFLUOROCARBON 22

Description

Hydrochlorofluorocarbon 22 (HCFC-22), also known as chlorodifluoromethane, is a synthetic compound with the chemical formula CHClF2. Initially developed as a refrigerant and propellant, HCFC-22 has been phased out in many applications due to its ozone-depleting properties. In the context of skincare and dermatology, HCFC-22 is not typically used as an active ingredient in formulations. Its primary relevance to the field lies in its historical use as a propellant in aerosol-based skincare products and medications. HCFC-22 is a colorless, nearly odorless gas at room temperature and pressure. It possesses low toxicity when inhaled in small quantities but can cause respiratory irritation at high concentrations. The compound's ability to readily evaporate made it effective for delivering topical medications and cosmetic products. However, environmental concerns led to its gradual replacement with more eco-friendly alternatives. The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer, has mandated the phase-out of HCFC-22 production and consumption. As a result, its presence in current skincare formulations is extremely rare, with formulators opting for safer and more sustainable propellants and delivery systems.
