homosalate
Description
Homosalate is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations, functioning as an effective UVB filter. This oil-soluble ingredient absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the 295-315 nm range, providing protection against the sun's harmful rays. Chemically, homosalate is an ester of salicylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, giving it unique properties that make it suitable for various cosmetic applications.
In sunscreen products, homosalate typically comprises 1-15% of the formulation, depending on the desired SPF level. Its efficacy is enhanced when combined with other UV filters, creating broad-spectrum protection. Homosalate's molecular structure allows it to penetrate the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, where it forms a protective barrier.
While generally considered safe for use in cosmetics, some studies have raised concerns about its potential as an endocrine disruptor and its environmental impact on aquatic ecosystems. Regulatory bodies, including the FDA and EMA, continue to monitor its safety profile. Despite these concerns, homosalate remains a popular choice in sunscreen formulations due to its stability, ease of formulation, and effectiveness in protecting against UVB radiation.
