Description

Hexachlorophene is a powerful antimicrobial agent that has been used in skincare and medical applications for its potent bacteriostatic properties. This synthetic bisphenol compound is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria, making it valuable in controlling skin infections and reducing bacterial colonization.

Historically, hexachlorophene was widely used in soaps, surgical scrubs, and various personal care products due to its ability to significantly reduce bacterial populations on the skin. Its mechanism of action involves disrupting bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting essential enzymes, effectively preventing bacterial growth and reproduction.

However, concerns about potential neurotoxicity, especially in infants and young children, have led to strict regulations on its use. In the United States, the FDA has limited hexachlorophene's concentration in over-the-counter products to 0.1% and restricted its use in prescription items to specific medical conditions under professional supervision.

While hexachlorophene remains an effective antimicrobial agent, its application in modern skincare formulations is limited. Alternative ingredients with improved safety profiles are often preferred for general use, reserving hexachlorophene for specialized medical treatments where its benefits outweigh potential risks.
