HESPERIDINASE

Description

Hesperidinase is a specialized enzyme that has gained attention in the skincare and haircare industries for its unique ability to enhance the bioavailability of certain flavonoids. This enzyme specifically targets hesperidin, a flavonoid glycoside found in citrus fruits, breaking it down into smaller, more easily absorbed molecules. In skincare formulations, hesperidinase can improve the efficacy of products containing citrus-derived ingredients by increasing their penetration into the skin.

The enzyme works by cleaving the glycosidic bond in hesperidin, releasing the aglycone hesperetin and rutinose. This process not only enhances absorption but also potentially amplifies the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of these compounds. In haircare, hesperidinase may contribute to improved scalp health and hair follicle nourishment when used in conjunction with citrus-based extracts.

Formulators typically incorporate hesperidinase in small concentrations, as its catalytic nature means a little goes a long way. It's often used in serums, leave-on treatments, and hair masks where prolonged contact allows for optimal enzymatic activity. While promising, more research is needed to fully understand the long-term benefits and potential applications of hesperidinase in cosmetic formulations.
