DESCRIPTION

What It Does: Provides localised oxygen delivery to skin from haemoglobin's o2-binding and release at physiological po2, accelerates aerobic wound healing by restoring oxygen availability to hypoxic damaged tissue, and conditions skin from the iron-porphyrin and globin protein.

Why It's Used: Topical hemoglobin provides a unique oxygenation mechanism for wound healing — the po2 at wound surfaces is typically 10-20 mmhg (hypoxic) versus normal tissue 40-60 mmhg; hemoglobin releases o2 at these lower po2 values providing aerobic metabolism restoration.

How It Works: Hemoglobin o2 binding/release: oxyhemoglobin (r-state, high o2 affinity) releases o2 at low po2 (wound surface) following the sigmoidal dissociation curve. o2 release in wound → aerobic tca cycle → collagen hydroxylation (requires o2 as prolyl hydroxylase substrate) → improved collagen cross-linking. iron from heme after heme oxygenase cleavage: stimulates hif-1α target gene expression.
