HEDTA

Description

HEDTA, or Hydroxyethyl Ethylenediamine Triacetic Acid, is a versatile chelating agent widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound belongs to the aminopolycarboxylic acid family and is known for its ability to form stable complexes with metal ions. HEDTA's primary function in skincare products is to enhance stability and preserve the efficacy of other ingredients.

In formulations, HEDTA acts as a sequestering agent, binding to metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron that can interfere with product performance or cause degradation. This property makes it particularly valuable in water-based products, where it helps prevent discoloration, rancidity, and the formation of precipitates. HEDTA also contributes to the overall shelf life of skincare products by inhibiting metal-catalyzed oxidation reactions.

Additionally, HEDTA can improve the foaming and cleansing properties of surfactants in cleansing products. It is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics when used at appropriate concentrations. However, as with any ingredient, some individuals may experience sensitivity. HEDTA is typically used at low concentrations, ranging from 0.05% to 0.5% in most skincare formulations.
