This semi-permanent colorant imparts a vibrant violet hue to hair and is particularly effective on pre-lightened or naturally light hair.

The compound belongs to the cationic dye family and has a molecular weight of 312.8 g/mol. It is water-soluble and typically appears as a dark purple powder in its raw form. HC Violet No. 3 penetrates the hair shaft, depositing color molecules that adhere to the hair's cortex.

In formulations, it is often combined with other dyes to create a range of purple and violet shades. The concentration used in hair products is generally between 0.1% to 2%, depending on the desired intensity. This ingredient is approved for use in hair dye products in many countries, including the European Union and the United States, under specific regulations.
