Glycosaminoglycans
Description
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are essential components of the skin's extracellular matrix, playing a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration, elasticity, and overall structural integrity. These long, unbranched polysaccharides are composed of repeating disaccharide units and are classified into several types, including hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and dermatan sulfate. GAGs possess remarkable water-binding capabilities, attracting and retaining moisture within the skin's layers, which contributes to a plump, youthful appearance.
In skincare formulations, GAGs are prized for their ability to enhance skin hydration, improve barrier function, and promote collagen synthesis. Hyaluronic acid, the most well-known GAG, can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent humectant. As natural GAG production declines with age, topical application of these compounds can help replenish skin moisture levels and support dermal structure.
GAGs also exhibit anti-inflammatory properties and may aid in wound healing processes. Their ability to interact with growth factors and cytokines further enhances their skin-beneficial effects. When incorporated into skincare products, GAGs can provide both immediate and long-term improvements in skin texture, firmness, and overall health.
