Description

Glycoproteins are complex biomolecules composed of a protein core covalently linked to one or more carbohydrate chains. These versatile compounds play crucial roles in various biological processes, including cell recognition, signaling, and immune response. In skincare, glycoproteins are prized for their ability to enhance moisture retention, promote cell communication, and support the skin's natural barrier function.

Derived from sources such as yeast, wheat, or marine organisms, glycoproteins in skincare formulations act as humectants and film-formers. They form a protective layer on the skin's surface, reducing transepidermal water loss and improving hydration. This action helps to maintain skin elasticity and suppleness.

Glycoproteins also facilitate intercellular communication, potentially stimulating collagen and elastin production. This property makes them valuable in anti-aging formulations. Additionally, their antioxidant properties help protect skin cells from oxidative stress and environmental damage.

When incorporating glycoproteins into skincare products, formulators must consider their molecular weight and stability.
