GLUTARAL
Description
Glutaral, also known as glutaraldehyde, is a potent biocide and preservative commonly used in various industries, including cosmetics and skincare. This dialdehyde compound is characterized by its ability to effectively eliminate a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In skincare formulations, glutaral is primarily employed as a preservative to extend product shelf life and maintain formula integrity.
At low concentrations, typically 0.1% or less, glutaral provides robust antimicrobial protection without significantly impacting product aesthetics. Its efficacy is particularly notable in water-based formulations, where microbial growth is more likely to occur. Glutaral's mechanism of action involves cross-linking proteins in microbial cell walls, leading to cellular disruption and death.
While effective, glutaral's use in cosmetics is controversial due to potential sensitization and irritation risks, especially at higher concentrations. Regulatory bodies, including the European Commission, have imposed strict limitations on its use in leave-on products. Formulators must carefully balance glutaral's preservative benefits against potential safety concerns, often opting for lower concentrations or alternative preservation systems in sensitive skin formulations.
