gluconolactone
Description
Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that has gained significant attention in the skincare industry due to its gentle yet effective exfoliating properties. This naturally occurring compound is derived from gluconic acid and belongs to the same family as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), but with a larger molecular structure. This unique characteristic allows gluconolactone to penetrate the skin more slowly, making it less irritating and suitable for sensitive skin types.
As a potent antioxidant, gluconolactone helps neutralize free radicals and protect the skin from environmental stressors. It also exhibits humectant properties, attracting and retaining moisture to improve skin hydration. Gluconolactone has been shown to enhance the skin's barrier function, reducing transepidermal water loss and improving overall skin health.
In skincare formulations, gluconolactone is typically used at concentrations between 3% and 15%. It can be combined with other active ingredients to create multifunctional products. Gluconolactone's mild exfoliating action helps improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and promote a more even skin tone. Its gentle nature makes it an excellent choice for daily use in various skincare products, including cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers.
