GLUCONIC ACID

Description

Gluconic acid is a mild alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from glucose oxidation. This naturally occurring compound is found in fruit, honey, and wine. In skincare formulations, gluconic acid serves as a gentle exfoliant and humectant, offering multiple benefits for various skin types.

With a larger molecular size compared to other AHAs, gluconic acid penetrates the skin more slowly, making it less irritating and suitable for sensitive skin. It works by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing smoother, more radiant skin. Additionally, gluconic acid possesses moisturizing properties, helping to hydrate and plump the skin.

This versatile ingredient also functions as a chelating agent, binding to metal ions in hard water and enhancing the efficacy of other skincare products. Gluconic acid has antioxidant properties, potentially protecting the skin from free radical damage. Its ability to regulate pH levels in formulations makes it valuable in stabilizing skincare products.

Typically used in concentrations between 3-10%, gluconic acid can be found in cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers. It pairs well with other AHAs and antioxidants, contributing to overall skin health and appearance.
