Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)

Description

Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid that plays a crucial role in skin health and overall well-being. This essential fatty acid is not produced by the human body and must be obtained through diet or topical application. GLA is derived from plant sources such as evening primrose oil, borage oil, and black currant seed oil.

In skincare formulations, GLA is valued for its anti-inflammatory and moisture-retaining properties. It helps strengthen the skin barrier, reduce transepidermal water loss, and improve skin elasticity. GLA is particularly beneficial for individuals with dry, sensitive, or mature skin types, as well as those prone to inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

When applied topically, GLA is readily absorbed by the skin and converted into prostaglandin E1, a compound that helps regulate cellular functions and reduce inflammation. This process can lead to improved skin texture, reduced redness, and enhanced overall skin health. GLA also supports the production of ceramides, which are essential for maintaining skin hydration and protecting against environmental stressors.
