Fruit Acid
Description
Fruit acids, also known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), are naturally occurring organic compounds found in various fruits and foods. These potent skincare ingredients include glycolic acid from sugarcane, lactic acid from milk, citric acid from citrus fruits, malic acid from apples, and tartaric acid from grapes. Fruit acids are widely used in cosmetic formulations due to their exfoliating and rejuvenating properties.
These acids work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and stimulating collagen production. This process helps to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and enhance overall skin clarity. Fruit acids also have humectant properties, attracting moisture to the skin and improving hydration.
The effectiveness of fruit acids depends on their concentration and pH level in the formulation. Lower pH levels increase penetration and efficacy but may also increase the risk of irritation. Most over-the-counter products contain fruit acids at concentrations between 5-10%, while professional treatments may use higher concentrations.
While generally well-tolerated, fruit acids can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation, making sunscreen use crucial. They may not be suitable for individuals with very sensitive skin or certain skin conditions.
