Description
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are a class of antimicrobial agents commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life. These compounds slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde over time, which acts as the primary preservative. Common examples include DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea.
These preservatives are effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, yeasts, and molds at low concentrations, typically between 0.1% to 0.5%. They function well in a wide pH range and are compatible with most cosmetic ingredients. Formaldehyde-releasers are particularly useful in water-based formulations prone to microbial contamination.
