FLUORESCENT BRIGHTENER 236
Description
Fluorescent Brightener 236, also known as Optical Brightener FWA-1, is a synthetic compound used primarily in haircare formulations. This water-soluble stilbene derivative belongs to the family of optical brighteners, which are designed to enhance the appearance of hair by increasing its perceived brightness and whiteness.
The ingredient functions by absorbing ultraviolet light and re-emitting it in the visible blue spectrum, effectively counteracting yellowing or dullness in hair. This optical effect creates the illusion of brighter, more vibrant hair, particularly beneficial for blonde, gray, or white hair types. Fluorescent Brightener 236 is especially effective in shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments.
In formulations, it is typically used at concentrations between 0.01% to 0.1%. The ingredient is stable in most pH ranges and compatible with many common haircare ingredients. It resists degradation from sunlight and washing, providing long-lasting effects. While generally considered safe for cosmetic use, some individuals may experience sensitivity. As with any hair care ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread use.
