FLUORESCENT BRIGHTENER 230

Description

Fluorescent Brightener 230, also known as Disodium Distyrylbiphenyl Disulfonate, is a synthetic optical brightener commonly used in haircare formulations. This water-soluble compound belongs to the stilbene class of chemicals and is characterized by its ability to absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible blue light.

In haircare products, Fluorescent Brightener 230 serves to enhance the appearance of hair by counteracting yellow tones and creating a perception of increased brightness and whiteness. It is particularly effective in products designed for gray, white, or blonde hair, where it helps to neutralize unwanted brassy or yellowish hues.

The ingredient functions by adhering to the hair shaft and absorbing UV light in the 340-370 nm range. It then emits light in the blue spectrum, typically around 430-450 nm, which creates an optical illusion of brighter, more luminous hair. Fluorescent Brightener 230 is stable in various pH environments and compatible with most haircare formulations, including shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments.

While generally considered safe for cosmetic use, it's important to note that some individuals may experience sensitivity to optical brighteners. As with any haircare ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread use.
