FERROUS GLYCINATE
Description
Ferrous glycinate, also known as iron bisglycinate or iron amino acid chelate, is a highly bioavailable form of iron used in dietary supplements and fortified foods. This compound consists of ferrous iron bound to glycine, an amino acid that enhances absorption and reduces gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with other iron supplements.
The unique molecular structure of ferrous glycinate allows for efficient absorption in the small intestine, bypassing the need for breakdown by stomach acid. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for individuals with sensitive stomachs or those prone to iron-related digestive discomfort. Studies have shown that ferrous glycinate has an absorption rate up to three times higher than ferrous sulfate, a common iron supplement.
In skincare formulations, ferrous glycinate can contribute to overall skin health by supporting collagen synthesis and promoting oxygen transport to skin cells. It may also aid in reducing hyperpigmentation and improving skin tone. However, its use in topical products is less common than in oral supplements.
When incorporated into dietary supplements or fortified foods, ferrous glycinate is generally well-tolerated and can effectively address iron deficiency without causing significant gastrointestinal distress or constipation.
