Fatty acids are essential components in skincare formulations, playing a crucial role in maintaining skin health and barrier function. These long-chain molecules, typically derived from plant oils or animal fats, are classified as saturated or unsaturated based on their chemical structure. In skincare, fatty acids serve multiple purposes, including moisturization, inflammation reduction, and sebum regulation.

Common fatty acids used in skincare include oleic, linoleic, and stearic acids. Oleic acid, found in olive and avocado oils, enhances skin penetration and provides emollient properties. Linoleic acid, abundant in sunflower and safflower oils, helps strengthen the skin barrier and regulate sebum production, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin. Stearic acid, present in shea butter and cocoa butter, acts as an emulsifier and thickening agent in formulations.

Fatty acids also contribute to the overall pH balance of skincare products and can improve the stability and texture of emulsions. When formulating with fatty acids, it's essential to consider their comedogenic potential and oxidation stability to ensure product efficacy and safety.
