FARNESOL

Description

Farnesol is a naturally occurring organic compound classified as a sesquiterpene alcohol. Found in essential oils from various plants, including citronella, neroli, and rose, it also occurs naturally in human skin. In skincare formulations, farnesol serves multiple purposes, primarily as a fragrance ingredient and antimicrobial agent.

This multifunctional compound exhibits potent antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it effective against various skin pathogens. Farnesol's ability to inhibit bacterial growth contributes to its use in products targeting acne and other skin infections. Additionally, it demonstrates deodorizing capabilities, often incorporated into antiperspirants and deodorants.

Farnesol's soothing properties can help reduce skin inflammation and irritation, potentially benefiting conditions like eczema or sensitive skin. It also functions as a penetration enhancer, potentially improving the absorption of other active ingredients in skincare formulations.

While generally considered safe for topical use, farnesol can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, particularly those sensitive to fragrances. As with any skincare ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread application, especially for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions.
