Farnesol
Description
Farnesol is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol found in various essential oils, including citronella, neroli, and rose. This colorless, oily liquid possesses a delicate, floral scent and exhibits multifaceted properties beneficial for skincare formulations. As an antimicrobial agent, farnesol effectively combats acne-causing bacteria, making it valuable in products targeting blemish-prone skin. Its deodorizing capabilities also make it useful in antiperspirants and foot care products.
In skincare, farnesol functions as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, helping to soothe irritated skin and neutralize free radicals. It has been shown to enhance skin barrier function by promoting ceramide synthesis, thus improving skin hydration and reducing transepidermal water loss. Farnesol also demonstrates potential in regulating sebum production, which can benefit individuals with oily skin concerns.
When formulating with farnesol, it's crucial to consider its concentration, as higher levels may cause skin sensitization in some individuals. Typically, it is used at concentrations between 0.01% and 0.1% in leave-on products. Farnesol synergizes well with other skincare actives, particularly in formulations targeting acne, aging, and skin barrier repair.
