Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, also known as octinoxate, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen and cosmetic formulations. This oil-soluble ingredient functions primarily as a UV filter, effectively absorbing UVB rays to protect the skin from sun damage. Its molecular structure allows it to form a protective barrier on the skin's surface, preventing harmful ultraviolet radiation from penetrating deeper layers.

With a maximum allowed concentration of 7.5% in the United States and 10% in Europe and Japan, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is often combined with other UV filters to achieve broad-spectrum protection. It exhibits excellent stability in various cosmetic formulations and contributes to higher SPF ratings in sunscreen products.

While effective, this ingredient has raised some environmental concerns due to its potential impact on coral reefs. As a result, some regions have restricted its use in sunscreens.
