Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, also known as octinoxate, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreen formulations and skincare products. This oil-soluble ingredient functions primarily as a UVB filter, offering protection against the sun's harmful rays that can cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.

The compound absorbs UV radiation in the 280-320 nm range, effectively shielding the skin from short-wave UVB rays. Its molecular structure allows it to disperse UV energy as heat, preventing damage to skin cells. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is valued for its high UV absorption capacity and stability in various cosmetic formulations.

Typically used at concentrations between 2% and 7.5%, this ingredient is often combined with other UV filters to achieve broad-spectrum protection. It's particularly effective in water-resistant formulations due to its hydrophobic nature.
