ETHYLBENZENE
Description
Ethylbenzene is an organic compound commonly used in various industrial applications, including the production of styrene and synthetic rubber. However, its presence in skincare and haircare products is limited and often unintentional. This colorless, flammable liquid is a byproduct of petroleum refining and can be found as a contaminant in some cosmetic formulations.
In the context of personal care products, ethylbenzene is not intentionally added for its beneficial properties. Instead, it may appear as a trace impurity in certain ingredients or solvents used in the manufacturing process. The compound has no known skin or hair benefits and is not considered an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations.
Regulatory bodies, such as the European Union's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), have assessed the safety of ethylbenzene in cosmetic products. While it is generally considered safe at low concentrations, prolonged exposure or high levels may cause skin irritation or other adverse effects. As a result, manufacturers are encouraged to minimize its presence in personal care products through careful ingredient selection and purification processes.
