Ethyl PABA, or ethyl 4-aminobenzoate, is a synthetic organic compound widely used in sunscreen formulations and cosmetic products. This ingredient functions primarily as a UV filter, absorbing UVB radiation to protect the skin from sun damage. With a molecular formula of C9H11NO2, Ethyl PABA is an ester of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and ethanol.

Historically popular in sunscreens, Ethyl PABA's use has declined in recent years due to concerns about allergic reactions and potential photoallergic responses in some individuals. It typically absorbs UV radiation in the 280-320 nm range, effectively shielding against UVB rays responsible for sunburn. The compound is oil-soluble, making it suitable for incorporation into various cosmetic formulations.

While Ethyl PABA can provide effective sun protection, it has been associated with skin irritation and sensitization in a small percentage of users. Additionally, some studies suggest it may increase free radical production when exposed to sunlight, potentially contributing to oxidative stress.
