ETHIODIZED OIL

Description

Ethiodized oil, also known as iodized poppy seed oil or Lipiodol, is a contrast medium used in medical imaging and therapeutic procedures. This oil-based compound is derived from poppy seed oil and contains iodine, which provides its radiopaque properties. The iodine content typically ranges from 37% to 38% by weight.

Originally developed for diagnostic purposes, ethiodized oil has found applications in various medical fields, particularly in interventional radiology and oncology. Its unique properties allow it to be retained in lymphatic tissues and certain tumors, making it valuable for lymphangiography and as a drug delivery vehicle in cancer treatment.

Ethiodized oil's viscosity and lipophilic nature enable it to remain in target tissues for extended periods, enhancing its effectiveness in certain procedures. It is commonly used in transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for liver cancer, where it serves as both a contrast agent and a carrier for chemotherapeutic drugs.

While generally considered safe, ethiodized oil may cause allergic reactions in some patients, particularly those with iodine sensitivity. Its use is contraindicated in pregnancy and should be administered cautiously in patients with thyroid disorders or renal impairment.
