ERYTHRULOSE

Description

Erythrulose is a natural keto-sugar derived from red raspberries that has gained popularity in the skincare industry as a self-tanning agent. This colorless, crystalline substance is chemically similar to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) but provides a more gradual and longer-lasting tan. Erythrulose works by interacting with amino acids in the skin's surface, producing a Maillard reaction that results in a bronzed appearance.

Unlike traditional self-tanners, erythrulose takes 24-48 hours to develop fully and can last up to 5-7 days. It is often combined with DHA in formulations to achieve a more natural-looking tan with improved color development and longevity. Erythrulose is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is less likely to cause the orange tones sometimes associated with DHA-only products.

In addition to its tanning properties, erythrulose has mild moisturizing effects on the skin. It is commonly incorporated into lotions, creams, and gels at concentrations ranging from 1-5%. While erythrulose provides some UV protection, it should not be relied upon as a sole means of sun protection and should be used in conjunction with broad-spectrum sunscreens.
