DOCOSANE
Description
Docosane is a long-chain hydrocarbon compound with the molecular formula C22H46. This waxy, solid substance is naturally found in plant cuticles and some mineral oils. In skincare and cosmetic formulations, docosane serves as an emollient and occlusive agent, helping to create a protective barrier on the skin's surface.
As a non-polar molecule, docosane effectively reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by forming a thin, hydrophobic film on the skin. This property makes it particularly useful in products designed for dry or sensitive skin types. Docosane also contributes to the smooth texture and spreadability of skincare formulations, enhancing their sensory appeal.
In haircare products, docosane can help to smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and improving overall manageability. It may also provide a subtle shine to the hair shaft without leaving a greasy residue.
While generally considered safe for topical use, docosane is not soluble in water and may potentially contribute to comedogenicity in some individuals. Formulators should consider this when developing products for acne-prone skin. Docosane is often used in combination with other emollients and occlusives to achieve optimal product performance and skin benefits.
