DMDM HYDANTOIN

Description

DMDM Hydantoin is a widely used preservative in personal care products and cosmetics. This synthetic compound, chemically known as 1,3-dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, acts as a formaldehyde releaser, gradually releasing small amounts of formaldehyde to inhibit microbial growth. Its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of bacteria, yeasts, and molds makes it valuable in extending product shelf life and maintaining formula integrity.

Typically used at concentrations between 0.1% to 0.6%, DMDM Hydantoin is water-soluble and effective in a pH range of 3 to 9. It's particularly useful in water-based formulations such as shampoos, conditioners, and liquid soaps. The ingredient's ability to work synergistically with other preservatives enhances its efficacy in complex formulations.

While DMDM Hydantoin is approved for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies worldwide, including the FDA and EU Cosmetics Regulation, it has faced scrutiny due to its formaldehyde-releasing properties. Some individuals may experience skin sensitization or allergic reactions. Formulators must consider potential sensitivities and adhere to regulatory limits when incorporating this preservative. Alternative preservation systems are increasingly being explored in response to consumer demand for formaldehyde-free products.
